Abortion tale gets hilariously graphic video

Binge drinking, simulated sex, fundamentalist Christian protesters and a bright pink coathanger going somewhere it shouldn’t. Yep, it can only be the long-awaited video for Amanda Palmer’s ‘Oasis’, a relentlessly perky tale of a reckless young lady who gets pregnant after drinking too much at a party but it’s all okay because her favourite Britpop band send her a letter. It’s all a bit ‘Little Britain’, but, y’know, actually funny. Watch out for Ben Folds as her nervous, long-suffering boyfriend and that little snitch Melissa. Video of the year so far? VP hopeful Sarah Palin, a staunchly anti-choice pro-lifer, will surely disagree, which is all the more reason to celebrate Amanda’s dedicating the clip to the nauseating “pitbull in lipstick”.

Cast of ‘Ugly Betty’ weigh in on the issue too

Melissa Etheridge is the latest public figure to join the outcry against Proposition 8, next week’s ballot in the state of California that seeks to overturn the legalisation of gay marriage, branding it “blatantly hateful and fearful”. The Grammy and Academy Award winning singer wed her girlfriend Tammy Lynn Michaels in 2003, the day after the California Supreme Court announced that same-sex unions would be given legal recognition, and the pair have since had a twin son and daughter using an anonymous sperm donor.

Fortunately, Melissa doesn’t seem to think that the constitutional amendment will be passed. “I believe the great citizens of California can see through [Proposition 8],” she writes, adding “The proponents of it have run the most fearful of television ads telling the people that if this doesn’t pass they will have to teach about homos to small grade school children. I can’t seem to recall any relationships ever being taught in school and I can’t find anything about that in this proposition.”

Band’s second album out in March

Anglo–Icelandic relations may be slightly strained of late (on account of them losing millions upon millions of our shiny English pounds), but glamorous Icelandic singer Thorunn Antonia is still very much a part of homegrown indie rockers Fields, who release their eagerly anticipated second album Hollow Mountains (so that’s where they’ve been hiding all our cash) in March next year. Phew!

In fact, you won’t even have to wait that long to reacquaint yourselves with the band’s anthemic brand of guitar pop as they’ve got a new single coming out on December 1st. Recorded on GarageBand, produced by guitarist/co-vocalist Nick Peill and mixed in New York by Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen), ‘Are You Ready Yet?’ first surfaced back in July alongside another new track, ‘Worst Love’, and proved to be a suitably energetic guitar workout with Thorunn’s girly sweetness once again the perfect foil for Nick’s soaring vocals.
