words in edgeways with charlotte hatherley

This summer marks 10 years since Charlotte Hatherley was plucked out of obscurity aged 18 and propelled into the limelight as the new guitarist for the previously triadic Ash. Whilst in the band, Charlotte was only credited with writing a few songs but in 2004 she released her debut solo album Grey Will Fade to much critical acclaim. After leaving Ash in 2006, Charlotte is now pursuing her solo career full time. Her second album The Deep Blue arrived earlier this year and she’s been touring it relentlessly. Ellen Forster caught up with Charlotte whilst stuck in traffic on the M6, one rainy summer afternoon. We did not want to dwell too much on her time in Ash (one senses that her departure from the band was not entirely amicable, despite press releases to the contrary), but her entrance to the music industry would be somewhat of a fairytale to the average teenage girl…
