Icelandic star plans to take her time over next studio project

Fans should savour this week’s release of fundraising single ‘Náttúra’ because it may be the last we hear of new Björk material for the next few years. Speaking exclusively to Pitchfork about the Náttúra campaign she’s currently involved with back in Iceland, she revealed that she plans to take 3-4 years making her next studio album.

It’s partly a reaction to releasing last year’s Volta (review) against her usual perfectionist nature, she says: “Volta was very immediate, a very physical project. I knew when I was making it, I could have spent probably three more years on it and do it much better, but I just needed to be spontaneous and physical and go out.”

Happy anniversary!

Being a UK-based mag we don’t often report on US tours that we can’t go to, but I couldn’t resist picking up on this story. Much-loved (by us and many of you, it seems) husband-and-wife duo Over The Rhine have lined up some very special dates in December to celebrate their 20th year as a going concern. In the two decades since the pair recorded their first demos – which would eventually form their CS Lewis-inspired 1991 debut Till We Have Faces – Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler have released 10 studio albums, four live recordings and four compilations, coupled with relentless touring.

A cause for celebration and reflection then, and the band have grand plans to mark it. They’ve booked a two-night residency at a lovely theatre in their native Cincinnati during which they will play songs from across their back catalogue, including selections from their critically revered Christmas albums The Darkest Night Of All (1996) and Snow Angels (2006).

Apply now for a vendor table

Glossy US feminist magazine and Wears The Trousers inspiration BUST is bringing its largest annual crafts event to the UK for the first time in December. The Christmas Craftacular has been held in New York since 2005 but this year will also take place in Los Angeles and London. BUST will be hand-selecting over 25 crafters from across the UK to attend the event to be held on December 6th at St Aloysius Social Club in Euston (midday–midnight). As well as hundreds of handmade jewellery, accessories, cards and other wares to browse, there will be classes, drinking and, in case you’re wondering what this has to do with music (admittedly not much), DJs and dancing. For more information, BUST have prepped a handy FAQ, including details on how to apply for a table. Closing date is November 14th.

New EP of protest songs on the way from “yellow-dog Democrat”

Exactly two weeks after her latest album Little Honey hit the shops and exactly one week before the US presidential election, Lucinda Williams is set to release a four-song digital EP of politically charged live material including a previously unreleased original track and three well-chosen covers. The new song, ‘Bone Of Contention’, was recorded at Summerfest in Milwaukee this past July and, as Williams told Billboard in a recent interview, was originally earmarked for Little Honey. “The track didn’t come out the way I wanted it to [in the studio],” she explains. “We went out to do some shows, as I played the song by myself…it just came out killer.”

The covers sound pretty killer too, and pretty diverse at that. Recorded live in Greensboro, North Carolina, in September 2007, the songs include Bob Dylan’s ‘Masters Of War’, Buffalo Springfield’s ‘For What It’s Worth’ and the Thievery Corporation/Flaming Lips collaboration ‘Marching The Hate Machines (Into The Sun)’. And in case you’re still wondering whose side she’s on after reading those titles, this quote from another interview (with Rolling Stone) caught my eye: “I’m a yellow-dog Democrat, which is a Southern expression that means you always vote Democrat. I love this country, and I’m concerned that people aren’t going to be looking at the issues. Like, ‘I’m gonna vote for the cute babe who hunts.'”
