‘Gin’

What better way to mark the final day of our Kristin Hersh Week than with a brand new song fresh out of the studio? None, exactly, so here it is. We timed this thing so well, right?

‘Gin’ is the first of another dozen songs that Kristin will be uploading over the course of the year for all your downloading, listening and even remixing kicks on the newly relaunched CASH Music website (now operating officially as a non-profit organisation). Last year gave us what will soon become her new commercial release, Speedbath [more info], and who knows what the next 12 months will lead to. At the moment Kristin says that there’s no plan to name the series.

‘Gin’ is one of those songs that Kristin says seems to overlap between her solo and Throwing Muses songwriting styles, a phenomenon that’s relatively new to her, and was written in Sydney during Kristin’s Paradoxical Undressing / Throwing Muses tour back in December. Recorded back home in Rhode Island with Steve Rizzo, it’s the first song to feature “The Guitar That Love Built” [?]. Perhaps the finest antidote to all the commercialism of Valentine’s Day we can think of. We’ve posted the link to the 320kbps MP3 below; visit the CASH Music site to read Kristin’s notes, the lyrics, or to download FLAC and mix stems.

i have a taste of you(tube): kristin on camera

When we set out to trawl through YouTube and pick out all of Kristin’s finest moments on camera we slightly underestimated the sheer amount of stuff that’s on there. Not sure why. We are talking about a woman whose career is now in its 23rd year. Now it’s late and I feel a little dizzy from all the shaky concert camera work and bad overlay fonts so forgive me for keeping this brief. Some of the most wonderful videos of Kristin are actually archived over at fan community Wild Vanilla and not on YouTube; also, major label grumps have sucked the sound off the official clip for ‘Your Ghost’ rendering it all but useless. Liver-twisting logic? You got it.

immune to broken: a guide to kristin hersh’s speedbath

Constructed piecemeal over the course of a year, Kristin Hersh’s new album Speedbath is a highly varied, fascinating collection of songs that, thanks to her CASH Music venture, has provided her fans with unprecedented insight into her creative process. The full album – or, rather, a version of it – has been available to download for free since December and Wears The Trousers has spent a possibly unhealthy amount of time cosying up to it, coaxing it to reveal ever more secrets. We’re insatiable like that.

Here we take a look at each of the dozen songs in the order in which they appeared between November 2007 and December 2008. As it has been handily pointed out by one of Kristin’s fans, there are over 479 million ways in which these 12 songs could be ordered, taking over 50,000 years to play all combinations, so you can forgive Kristin for taking her time in deciding on a final tracklist. Oh, and she’s re-recorded them all anyway. With the final album going to the presses at the end of this month, and a commercial release pencilled in for June, quite what form the final Speedbath will take remains a delicious mystery. We can hardly wait.

a player of three acts: a buyer’s guide to kristin hersh

Since 1986, under the banners of Throwing Muses, her own name, and 50 Foot Wave, Kristin Hersh has released some 20 albums. And what with bipolar disorder, a lost custody battle for her first-born son, a dissolving band, and in her own way overcoming the unhappy beast that is the music industry, Hersh has weathered a lot. The frenetic use of loops, cowbells, shifting time signatures and frantic, dark, unsettling stream-of-consciousness poetry of Throwing Muses’ untitled debut still inspires shock and awe, and throughout her career Hersh has delivered several other albums that are no less astounding.

Mercurial in the extreme, each of Hersh’s guises has a distinct personality, and in her longstanding concerns as lead Muse and a solo artist, these personalities have themselves matured. Hersh is frequently a challenging artist, viewed by many as an acquired taste. Her style may not be immediately everybody’s cup of tea, but perseverance is recommended. All her work retains certain traits – oblique lyrics, a Proustian gift for evocation, and highly skilled but understated musicianship – and the catalogue we’re about to delve into really does offer something for every music fan.

You thought that it would never happen. Even we thought it might never happen. But here it is! Our brand new issue: 90 pages of visual goodness, and free to download too.

2008 was a great year for Wears The Trousers. Well, the second half anyway. Since we relaunched at the beginning of July with a brand new website, a new editorial team and a renewed sense of purpose, everything seems to have gone from strength to strength.

The articles in this issue are a selection of those we’ve featured on our website throughout the year, plus previously unpublished interviews with Anaïs Mitchell, Those Dancing Days and the incomparable Kristin Hersh.

To celebrate, we’ve officially designated it KRISTIN HERSH WEEK on Wears The Trousers and we’ll be bringing you lots more Kristin stuff to enjoy until Friday. Right now though, the only way you can read our in-depth interview with the remarkable lady herself is to download our new issue…
