Alessi’s Ark
‘Hands In The Sink’

Not a track from her upcoming EP, Soul Proprietor (due April 5), but a wee little taster for the forthcoming 21-track compilation from Communion, the popular club night turned music community formed by Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett, Cherbourg’s Kevin Jones and producer Ian Grimble in 2006, ‘Hands In The Sink’ is a soft acoustic ditty about the humble joys of domesticity from Alessi Laurent-Marke. It’s slight but charming, and slots in nicely with other featured tracks from the likes of Peggy Sue, Johnny Flynn, Jeremy Warmsley and Broadcast 2000, to name but a few. The compilation, out Monday, also features tracks from a couple of ladies who are new to our ears: Elena Tonra and Rachel Sermanni – check them out. MP3 after the jump.

Laura Marling
I Speak Because I Can

[EMI; March 22]

The final piece of the puzzle dropped into place today for Laura Marling’s forthcoming album I Speak Because I Can with the unveiling of the rather mysterious artwork you see above. The first of an intended two full-lengths for 2010, and one that’s already been drawing huge acclaim from those who’ve heard it, the album is one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of the Spring. Details have also emerged about the bonus content you’ll be able to find on the bonus DVD that comes with the special edition version: a 45-minute documentary, live performances from the Laura Marling & Friends show at the Royal Festival Hall last year [review], and the video for upcoming single ‘Devil’s Spoke’ (out March 15). What’s more, the DVD will allow access to an area of Laura’s website where tracks from many of the artists who appeared at the sell-out gig will be free to download.

Alessi’s Ark
Soul Proprietor EP

[Bella Union; April 5]

We’ve been looking forward to hearing new stuff from Alessi Laurent-Marke for months now. Last year’s debut album Notes From The Treehouse is still a regular on our office stereo and the new songs we’ve been hearing in various underground caverns have been mighty impressive indeed. She’s been recording them with various people, including Sons Of Noel & Adrian and her regular touring band, and while the official tracklist for this new EP – her first for Bella Union – has yet to be announced, we’re hoping to hear the likes of ‘Shovelling’, ‘Wire’, ‘The Bird Song’ and ‘Mountain’ in their full studio glory.

UPDATE: Final tracklist now in! Two out of four ain’t bad…

january gig guide

So, January, yeah. Rubbish, isn’t it? Dark, cold, still bloated from Christmas, the annual humiliation of failing to keep your resolutions for longer than a fortnight, nothing to do…wait! Nothing to do? The gig year doesn’t usually heat up properly until March or so but there’s plenty worth seeing. We’ve trawled the listings to pick out something to warm your cockles for every black, freezing night of the month, starting tonight!

Blue Roses
Blue Roses

[XL; April 2009]

What we said then: “Featuring a faded photograph of a barren coastal scene on its cover and no further clues as to what you might expect to find inside, this mysterious album leaves it to the music to do the talking. What is concealed inside is an instant classic debut; a patient and timeless record that offers a welcome antidote to the frantic absurdity of modern life… Blue Roses sounds blissfully unaware of the latest music industry trends. Unlike current flavour of the month Natasha Khan, [Laura] Groves seems to understand that it takes more than an ’80s drumbeat to channel the spirit of Kate Bush, creating something altogether more original and rewarding than many of her peers.” •••• Richard Steele

What we say now: It’s lovely to see Blue Roses this high up on the list – great recognition for a fantastic debut that we think will stand the test of time. The follow-up EP, Does Anyone Love Me Now?, released in December, is well worth getting too.
