The Pipettes
‘Our Love Was Saved By Spacemen’

Pity The Pipettes? It all seemed to go so improbably right for a short while, when the likes of ‘Pull Shapes’ and ‘Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me’ were soundtracking every indie-pop club night in the country, but just a few years later a reputation-decimating revolving door of members seemed to leave them up shit creek. Now fronted by sole remaining member Gwenno Saunders and her sister Ali, ‘Our Love Was Saved By Spacemen’ is their stab at clawing back some of that glory and, you know, it’s a bit of a grower. As the decade has turned, so have The Pipettes moved on; instead of ’60s girl-group faux naiveté, here they’re playing on a 1970s sci-fi vibe – just as kitsch but perhaps a little bit more grown up. A little. The song itself doesn’t quite carry itself all the way through, occasionally lapsing into a generic backbeat, and Ani’s vocals take a bit of getting used to, but it’s altogether twinkly and sweet and proves that The Pipettes can’t yet be written off. MP3 after the jump.

The first single proper from new album Earth Vs. Pipettes will be ‘Stop The Music’, out April 19 through Fortuna POP!
