Joan Jett & Todd Oldham
[Ammo Books; April 15]
Not content with executive producing the new Runaways biopic, in which she is portrayed by ‘Twilight’ saga actress Kristen Stewart, Joan Jett is capitalising on the resurgence of interest in the band that played such a huge role in her formative years with a 256-page book co-written with Todd Oldham and featuring an introduction by riot grrl heroine Kathleen Hanna. Taking us from the formation of The Runaways with schoolfriend Cherie Currie (played by Dakota Fanning in the movie) through to her present-day life as a hard-touring rock ‘n’ roll icon, this eponymous biography displays a pioneering spirit that refused to be extinguished by the disintegration of The Runaways in the wake of music industry shenanigans and substance abuse.
This same gritty determination allowed Jett to empower countless other female artists by becoming the first to set up her own label, Blackheart Records, who release a companion Greatest Hits compilation on March 9. With several never before seen photographs to tempt fans even more, Joan Jett should be a must read.
