Kathryn Williams
‘Noble Guesses’

With seven albums already under her belt and a second baby on the way, it would be understandable if Kathryn Williams felt like taking a break. But far from it; two years on from her collaborative album with Neill MacColl, Kathryn is back with The Quickening (February 22), the first of three albums she’s been working on. As she described to us earlier this week, the record was made over four days with no more than three takes per track, and perhaps this immediacy is what lends it such a fresh and wholesome sound. Kathryn has been compared with Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, but ‘Noble Guesses’ is far more whimsical. She attended art school, and her background in visual narratives comes across clearly. The lyrics are pure storytelling, and describe Mendeleyev’s invention of the periodic table with the lovely line “Dreams are where inventions sleep”. ‘Noble Guesses’ is beautifully simple, making it equally suitable for watching clouds float across a meadow as it is for smoking out of the kitchen window after a party. MP3 after the jump.
