April Smith & The Great Picture Show

Recommended as one of Rolling Stone’s 30 hot acts to watch at last year’s Lollapalooza festival, Brooklyn singer-songwriter April Smith funded her album Songs For A Sinking Ship (out February 23) solely via fan donations through Kickstarter.com. And those eager donators won’t be disappointed with preview offering ‘Colors’. The track starts off like a polished one-woman band, the understated bass drum and jangly guitar strum leaving plenty of space for Smith’s rich, sultry vocals to take charge. Conjuring up images of April and her band scratching washboards and beating garbage cans in the back garden, the homespun feel is stepped up a notch with a quirky kazoo solo, cleverly replacing the usual predictable guitar breaks of her peers. Finishing off with a jolly old-fashioned knees-up, ‘Colors’ is a catchy, if a little repetitive, number that is sure to have you tapping your toes and being part of the band in your very own bedroom. MP3 after the jump.
