‘On Giving Up’
The first track to be taken from the upcoming album High Places vs. Mankind, ‘On Giving Up’ represents a cleaner, more streamlined version of the hypnotic, heavily percussive sound that Mary Pearson and Rob Barber went some way to perfecting on their 2008 self-titled debut. The wooden blocks remain, as do the crisp beats, but this is an altogether more forthright proposition. For a start, Mary’s vocals are higher in the mix, and less girly-sweet than before, giving the song a slightly more grown-up appeal, even introducing electric guitar sounds which they had previously shunned. “It’s hard to give up the thing that makes it all seem right,” she sighs, but whatever sacrifices they have made in creating this gem seem likely to pay off if the rest of the album is up to this standard. MP3 after the jump.
