raincoats’ gina birch to take new climate change inspired project to copenhagen

Gina Birch of The Raincoats is headed to the climate conference in Copenhagen next week with new performance project Café Carbon, teaming up with artists Hayley Newman and Kaffe Matthews to raise awareness of how modern consumerism impacts the planet. Collectively known as The Gluts (“an allegory for over-consumption”), the three women will be travelling to Copenhagen aboard the specially commissioned Campaign Against Climate Change train that departs from Brussels on Friday. While on the train, the group will be performing a “menu” of songs about food and climate, asking audience members to pick starters, mains and desserts in the form of songs, including ‘Stone Cold Soup’, ‘Cheap Cheap Chicken’, ‘OilY’ (“specially flown around the world three times for your predilection”) and “the most extravagant feast on Earth”, ‘The Grand Buffet’. As for dessert, well, “the Tiramisu and Crème Caramel are off the menu today, the only choices left are Sanity or Madness”.

Financially supported by the Arts Council, The Gluts will also be taking to streets, cafés and restaurants of Copenhagen to perform their material. Gina will be putting her experience as a filmmaker to good use by making a documentary/art film of their trip. They”ll be taking their performance to the AV Festival in Newcastle on March 13, and also appearing at Café OTO in London on March 19. Find out more here.
