‘The Engine Driver’ [live]

Good news for Aimee Mann lovers: the Virginian singer-songwriter has launched a new online store to sell high-quality MP3s and lossless audio tracks from her entire SuperEgo back catalogue, that is, her five albums from 1999’s Magnolia OST to 2008’s @#%&*! Smilers, direct to her fans. Each album, with the exception of 2000’s Bachelor No. 2, comes complete with a mouthwatering selection of B-sides, live recordings and other exclusives, which can be bought all together in one collection, aptly titled Rarities. Included among these delights are Aimee’s lovely cover of Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’ and ‘The Engine Driver’, a previously unreleased live recording of a track from The Decemberists’ justly lauded 2005 album Picaresque featuring members of the band on backing.

Available for free for a limited time only, ‘The Engine Driver’ is pretty much what you might imagine a Decemberists song featuring Aimee Mann on vocals would sound like. Both Aimee and Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy have similarly nasal tones – not unpleasantly, we hasten to add – so it isn’t too much of a stretch to put Aimee in his place. It’s nothing essential but a pretty nice freebie while we wait for Aimee’s next release. In the meantime, she has just revealed that she’s about to start work on a stage musical based on her 2005 concept album The Forgotten Arm. We can’t wait! MP3 after the jump.
