A bit of a folk special today. First up we have the wonderful Kathryn Williams, who is returning to her own solo material after last year’s collaboration with Neill MacColl. The former Mercury Prize nominee is back with her seventh album in February 2010, which she succinctly describes as “quiet”. Presumably she’ll have more details to divulge about the release in a few weeks when she graces parts of the UK with a short run of shows. Joining her on stage will be bassist Simon Edwards, who has previously been a member of Billy Bragg & The Blokes, Fairground Attraction and Red Box. Catch her at the following venues:

24.10.09 Town Hall, Masham
26.10.09 The Met, Bury
27.10.09 Dingwalls, London
28.10.09 Cellar Bar, Bracknell
29.10.09 Phoenix, Exeter
10.11.09 Terry O’Toole Theatre, Lincolm

Kate Rusby, another former Mercury Prize nominee, hits the road in December for a 10-date UK tour. Expect selections from last year’s lovely seasonal album, Sweet Bells [review], as well as plenty of delights from her six solo albums. Kate gave birth to her first child, Daisy Delia Rubsy O’Kane, on September 15th, so she’ll be either glowing with maternal pride or exhausted from sleepless nights. Ever the pro, she’ll no doubt shine whatever. Catch her at the following venues:

04.12.09 Dome, Brighton
06.12.09 IndigO2, London
07.12.09 Grand Theatre, Blackpool
09.12.09 Corn Exchange, Cambridge
10.12.09 Town Hall, Birmingham
12.12.09 Pyramid & Parr Hall, Warrington
13.12.09 Coronation Hall, Ulverston
18.12.09 Victoria Hall, Stoke On Trent
19.12.09 Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry
20.12.09 Playhouse, Nottingham

Finally, we have some new dates from Sharron Kraus, one of the UK’s most compelling voices in modern folk. She’ll be touring alongside similarly minded musicians C Joynes and Peter Delaney. Expect to hear new material from her forthcoming album, which she says has been completed. She’s just looking for a label to snap it up, so get on it industry people. If it’s anywhere near as good as last year’s The Fox’s Wedding [review], then it will be special indeed. Catch her at the following venues:

14.10.09 CB2, Cambridge
15.10.09 Cafe OTO, London
16.10.09 Cider Shed, Norwich
17.10.09 Morden Tower, Newcastle
18.10.09 Leaf Tea, Liverpool
19.10.09 The Cube, Bristol
20.10.09 Club Anemone @ Champions, Bournemouth
21.10.09 Orange Street Music, Canterbury

The only time I have been to the Par Hall was to see Stephen K.Amos this year, he’d been promoted from the Pyramid Centre and had a lot to live up to. The support act for the evening was Seann Walsh, who I’ve seen on telly somewhere but can’t remember exactly where. He did a pretty good job of warming up the audience but definitely had that weird ’support act that’s pretty funny but it isn’t entirely working because the audience know he’s not the guy who they actually came to see’ vibe. I think Stephen is really good at making fun of the audience members with such warmth that you can’t help but feel a sense of community in the room. It was still a very funny gig and my opinion is clearly influenced by my expectations. I’d certainly go and see him again and I would recommend that you go and see him. I think he’d be an excellent first choice for any live-comedy virgins. Stayed at one of the Village hotels in Warrington when I went to see him. Great night from what I can remember and the Par Hall is a stunning venue.
