Having already released two singles this year in the unconventional formats of a watch (really!) and a long-form cassette tape, Leeds trio Sky Larkin take the road more travelled with latest release ‘Smarts’. A brand new song recorded in Wales during a 24-hour window with John Goodmanson, producer of their debut album The Golden Spike, released back in February, they’re offering it up as a free download in exchange for your email address. Don’t let that condition deter you; ‘Smarts’ is a worthy addition to their ever-growing catalogue by virtue of being the most forceful track they’ve laid down to date, and by golly it suits them. Unpolished but not what you would necessarily call ‘raw’, it gallops by with an appealingly roughshod demeanour, spurred on by some powerhouse drumming from Nestor Matthews, only to crash to a halt just as it starts to really get going. That’s okay though. It’s a swerve into the fast lane, a tentative indication followed by an abrupt pull back in. And just as a taste of danger can soon form the basis of an appetite, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear a brasher, less indie-polite Sky Larkin on the next album. The free download comes with a bonus acoustic version of Golden Spike track ‘Matador’.
