By the time Laura Veirs releases her seventh full-length album July Flame in mid-January next year, we’ll have been salivating over it for a whole 6 months. Luckily it sounds as if the wait will have been worth it as Laura has revealed that she’s been experimenting with “oddball tunings” and searching out “new-sounding melodies and patterns” in a new biography posted on her official website. The title of the album comes from a variety of peaches she found for sale at a farmer’s market in Portland, Oregon; she liked the name so much that she and a friend decided they would each try to write a song with the same title, kickstarting a flood of new material that brought the total number of songs written for the album to around 75. “I’d been in a songwriting slump at that time and writing that song pushed me over my plateau and into a new place where I was surprising myself again,” she says, adding, “I wrote this album from a searching, soulful place. I hope it elicits a real gut feeling.”

The release will be the first major release through her Raven Marching Band imprint, and features guest vocals from Jim James of My Morning Jacket. Tucker Martine returns as producer for the sixth consecutive album, with longtime collaborator Karl Blau and Old Believers member Annalisa Tornfelt also helping out.
