‘Not A Drum’

By most people’s standards, Annie Sachs, aka Tickley Feather, goes a little off the compass. Originally from the wilds of rural Virginia before moving to Philadelphia, her self-titled debut snuck in quietly through the back door in 2008, its strange lo-fi noises and ghostly vocals beckoning for repeated listens, and your undivided attention. From spending four years putting her fragmented, spacey-folk sound together in her living room, to opening for Animal Collective and their newly solo member, Panda Bear, Sachs’s second full-length release, Hors D’oeuvres, will be creeping into the light on October 19th.

‘Not A Drum’ sees her return with a more accessible sound and a unsettling catchy hook; pop, but not in a wholesome sense. At all. The music-box chime coupled with the wave of distortion behind it gives it a kind of Baby-Jane-Hudson-by-the-Sea quality, with Annie’s delicate vocals wringing out in the distance for some added chills. An intriguing introduction to her new material; innocent with a hint of menace, as if Alice had followed the white rabbit, fallen down the hole and found a four-track recorder instead of an annoying Cheshire cat. Curiouser and curiouser indeed. MP3 after the jump.
