‘All Time Low

Canadian alt-country bastion Carolyn Mark returns on October 13th with her sixth studio album Let’s Just Stay Here, a collaboration with fellow alt-countryists and compatriots NQ Arbuckle. Her past collaborations have included work with Neko Case in the improbably honky-tonk duo The Corn Sisters; Mark’s project this time around takes a more characteristic world-weary tone, with the resigned defeat of the album title reverberating through the song’s minor riff (which, incidentally, wouldn’t be out of place in a James Bond film set in Alabama), and mirrored in the opening lyrics “Down in Death Valley on the day of the dead”. It’s a song which is as prone to licking its own wounds and is as full of regret’s sad wisdom as a hangover the size of Texas.

“This place, it ain’t a casino,” drawls Mark in her native Negative, but the song does give a strong impression of red and black, and of watching one’s luck swept off the table along with so many plastic chips. The guitars’ carefully repeated riff and occasional tremolo punctuation keep the music sparse and the attention focussed on the narrative arc of the lyrics, which, overtired and underwhelmed though they may be, never leads to an ‘all time low’. MP3 after the jump.
