‘Meet Me In The City’

2009 seems to be the year of the ‘supergroup’, with everyone from Jack White and Alison Mosshart (The Dead Weather) to James Iha, Adam Schlesinger and Taylor Hanson (Tinted Windows), via Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones (Them Crooked Vultures), teaming up like musical Transformers. Brooklyn’s tight-knit lo-fi community can now boast their very own small-time super-league, The Babies, who we first mentioned earlier this month. The trio consist of Woods bassist Kevin Morby and Bossy’s drummer Justin Sullivan, with guitar duties and vocals handled by the ever-cool Cassie Ramone of Wears The Trousers favourites Vivian Girls.

The band formed last year when Kevin and Cassie were sharing an apartment and fell into the inevitable process of room-mate jams, eventually morphing into something more special. ‘Meet Me In The City’ is one of two tracks currently up on their Myspace, and while Cassie seems to be lead vocalist for the project, this one sees Kevin taking the lead, his shouting, twanging vox sweetened with Cassie’s clear tones. It’s perfect, sing-song rock and roll with a surfy undertow and a happy-clappy ’60s vibe. Kevin writes the majority of The Babies’ material, giving Cassie a reprieve from her usual scribing role in Vivian Girls, but the ‘side project’ tag is firmly attached to this one, so there doesn’t seem to be any rush to market their set-to-go album’s worth of material just yet. MP3 after the jump.
