‘Buster Voodoo’

There are a lot of theories about the significance of 11:11, a numerological reference used in recent years by the likes of Rufus Wainwright, Maria Taylor and Regina Spektor. New Age philosophers and Uri Geller are obsessed with it too, and now Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela are the latest to ascribe their own meaning to this oddly evocative o’clock, adopting it for the title of their upcoming album. While some no doubt believe that time itself will reset at the 11th second past the 11th minute of the 11th hour on November 11th 2011, in Rodrigo y Gabriela’s case, theirs is a nod to the many observations that link 11:11 with musical heroes Pink Floyd, specifically their 1994 album The Division Bell. A passionate and fearless instrumental duo, their preternatural ability to wring unearthly sounds and rhythms out of their guitars, especially when seen live, is almost as if they were beamed back from a more evolved world where musicians have acquired a superhumanity beyond anything our poor weak brains can comprehend. They’re really that astonishing, and they show no signs of slowing down with 11:11.

Preview track ‘Buster Voodoo’, written in honour of Jimi Hendrix, is every bit as impressive as their fans have come to expect. Expert instrumental prowess is a given, but it’s the emotion in their performances that really dazzles. So expressive is the playing that there’s a few shocking moments where they actually come close to mimicking the human voice itself. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but musos and wannabe Guitar Heroes will be left a little slack-jawed. MP3 after the jump.
