‘The Slayer’

Countless guises and almost 30 years on from joining her first band aged 15, punk and industrial rock icon Carla Bozulich seems to have settled on the nicely collaborative format of Evangelista as her primary outlet. Their latest opus, Prince Of Truth, due October 6th, is being touted as “More experimental, more urgent, more challenging, more coherent” by current label Constellation Records, a claim to which preview track ‘The Slayer’ fiercely attests. Ostensibly the band’s third outing, the seven-track album sees Bozulich working with a rich melting pot of artists, including long-time bassist Tara Barnes and San Francisco rave star Arthur Dent (originally Dominic Cramp) on keyboard duties, with further contributions from Xiu Xiu member Ches Smith, multi-instrumentalist composer Shahzad Ismaily, Wilco member and fellow ex-Geraldine Fibber Nels Cline, and “bike wheel/thumb piano player” Lisa Gamble.

‘The Slayer’ is a deliciously dark, sonic mess sculpted into a primal symphony. Spoken-word intonation serrates across the sprawling track, while the almost swamp-like noise of the song’s beginning eventually gives way to a chainsaw-heavy melody and vicious, existential lyrics. Very, very far from easy listening, but perfect if you feel like diving into the abyss. MP3 after the jump.
