Billboard’s annual Women In Music Event is coming up at the beginning of October, and this year they’ll be putting a ring (well, a halo) on Beyoncé Knowles as their 2009 Woman Of The Year in honour of her achievements over the past 12 months. Since the release of her third album I Am…Sasha Fierce in November 2008, Saint Beyoncé has not just revelled in colossal chart hits and massive sales, but she’s also shown her charitable side. In the US, she gave away 2500 free tickets for her I Am… tour to families affected by the collapse of the auto industry in Detroit. She also teamed up with the Feeding America charity and General Mills Hamburger Helper to provide an astonishing 3.5 million meals to local food banks.

“Beyoncé is a multi-platinum artist and a multi-talented woman who clearly embodies the qualities of excellence and achievement that the Billboard Woman Of The Year Award was created to honour,” Billboard’s Editorial Director Bill Werde said yesterday. “She has not only influenced pop culture with her hit songs and signature dance moves, but has inspired women everywhere with her unique style, business savvy and dedication to charitable causes.”

Previous winners of the award since its 2007 inception are Reba McEntire and last year’s winner Ciara. The untelevised ceremony will be held in New York City on October 2nd, and will coincide with a special issue of Billboard magazine celebrating female executives who are “power players” in the industry.
