250809_cranberriesBand will tour by the end of the year

Just as we suspected, The Cranberries have reformed. The announcement came exactly two weeks after lead singer Dolores O’Riordan abandoned her plans to tour behind the release of her second solo album No Baggage, out this week [review], with the not-so-cryptic aside that “what was old, just may become new again.” In fact, the seeds behind The Cranberries reunion were first sown back in January this year, when Dolores and the Hogan brothers played a gig together at Trinity College in Dublin in honour of Dolores’s induction as an Honorary Patron of the Philosophical Society (have they read her lyrics?). It was reportedly the first time they had seen each other in 6 years, and clearly had a big impact.

Fast forward 7 months and it seems that all four original members of The Cranberries (including drummer Fergal Lawler) are gearing up for a tour of North America by the end of the year, “performing tracks off my new album as well as our greatest hits,” says Dolores. European dates will be announced for early 2010.  “Over the last few years, each member of the band has had time to work on different projects and learn so much from their experience,” explains Noel Hogan. “Now the time is right for The Cranberries to bring all of this together and move forward.” Assuming a new album does indeed materialise, it will be the band’s first since 2001’s Wake Up & Smell The Coffee, and an unexpected new chapter in their 20-year recording career.
