‘Empire’s Dream’

Lovingly referred to as “a total muso” by her good friend Tara Jane O’Neil in our issue #7 interview, Samara Lubelski’s reputation as a musician’s musician precedes her in every collaboration, of which there have been many and much heralded examples. It’s a mystery, then, why her solo releases have not typically attracted the same acclaim. Some have suggested that they are simply too sweet and poppy for the palates of those who like their music pricked with cacophonus disharmony – something that next week’s release of new album Future Slip is unlikely to reconcile. Produced by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, who’s putting the album out on his Ecstatic Peace! label, Future Slip is dreamy in every possible comprehension, often recalling the darling retro indie-pop of Isobel Campbell’s vastly underrated project The Gentle Waves.

Indeed, the essence of preview track ‘Empire’s Dream’ is straight out of the same gilded pocketbook as the second Gentle Waves album, Swansong For You, with the Vaseline-smeared, cloud-headed vocals and the way in which the drums skip in and out. But where Campbell’s lyrics could sometimes be a little plain, Lubelski’s are aloof and mysterious, so that the seeming naiveté of the music is beautifully counterpointed by the complexity of the words without overpowering or stifling the overall vibe. Samara says it best herself when she sings, “In the presence of unmending, players of the moment are doing good”. MP3 after the jump.
