‘Turn Them’

Norah Jones has enjoyed a somewhat charmed career up ’til now. After all, few artists are permitted by their audience and critics alike to transition as seamlessly as she has from the commercial jazz-pop of 2002’s Come Away With Me to the darker, more bohemian fare of 2007’s Not Too Late, via countrified outings with her side band The Little Willies and duets with Dolly Parton. And then there’s those crucial collaborations with artists perceived to be more credible: Mike Patton, Ryan Adams, OutKast, Foo Fighters – a list that’s burgeoning still. For her upcoming fourth solo album, due in November, Norah continues to expand her web of connections to the indie world with a new backing band consisting of Joey Waronker on drums, Marc Ribot on guitar and James Poyser on keys, while on the songwriting front Okkervil River frontman Will Sheff joins the returning Ryan Adams and Norah’s longtime associate Jesse Harris. But that’s not all. On the production front, she’s taken the bold step of recruiting Jacquire King, who famously helmed Tom Waits’s startling Mule Variations. Naysayers may scoff, but remember ‘Sinkin’ Soon’ from Not Too Late? That was pretty Waitsian and was by no means a car crash. Even if Norah broke her favourite teapot while working up the attendant clatter.

Today’s song has nothing to do with the upcoming album, sadly, though Waits would surely approve of someone with the adopted title of Bones (real name Sean Sullivan). ‘Turn Them’ is in fact a duet that first appeared on Bones’s solo debut RINGS last month, and is a jaunty breakup number with a light reggae vibe. Norah and Sean both star in Sam Fleischner and Ben Chace’s upcoming Brooklyn-by-way-of-Jamaica flick ‘Wah Do Dem’ which proved to be a hit at the recent Los Angeles Film Festival, so expect to hear more of this sort of thing soon. MP3 after the jump.
