110809_dawnlandesSweet Heart Rodeo charts the rough rides of romance

Coming off the back of last year’s well-received second album Fireproof, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Dawn Landes looks set to cement her reputation with her upcoming release Sweet Heart Rodeo, out September 7th through Cooking Vinyl. “Each song is like its own bull…Each ride its own love story,” she explains. “You know, trying to hang on to a wild thing isn’t always graceful,” she adds, though the same could not be said of her singing, which has an elegant but comfortable poise that most closely recalls the casual beauty of Laura Veirs.

Recorded in Dawn’s own studio in Brooklyn, the album takes its inspiration variously from rubbish ex-boyfriends (first single ‘Romeo’, released digitally on August 24th), the English seaside experience (‘Brighton’), car-crash weddings (‘All Dressed In White’), hippie wisdom (‘Money In The Bank’) and even Martin Scorsese’s classic film ‘Taxi Driver’ (‘Little Miss Holiday’, an imagined conversation between Jodie Foster and the teenage prostitute who inspired her character), among others. The album’s sole cover is an unusual take on Margo Guryan’s 1968 hit ‘Love’, for which Dawn took over the drums from regular collaborator Ray Rizzo; elsewhere, on ‘Romeo’, she borrows a hook from an old 1950s song by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

In other news, Dawn is one of eight artists to contribute to a new covers project that seeks to reinvent the songs from Harry Nilsson’s cult classic made-for-TV cartoon musical, ‘The Point!’, which told the story of poor Oblio, the only boy with a round head in a village of pointy-skulled people. Dawn has covered ‘Life Line’, Oblio’s plea for someone to recognise his loneliness, with other contributions coming from Andrew Bird, Nada Surf, DeVotchKa, Nathaniel Rateliff (aka The Wheel) and more. Songs From The Point! goes on sale on October 27th with all proceeds going to a project that tutors young writers in New York.
