‘Clay Bodies’

Out from Midwestern America armed with enough reverb to make the likes of Jana Hunter and Marissa Nadler jealous comes Nika Danilova waving a bedroom-music banner bearing the name of Zola Jesus. It’s a modest banner but provocative in its stance as its masked bearer stakes out her claim on the spoils. Indeed, that’s what she’s named her debut full-length: 15 bold, unsettling cries released through Sacred Bones Records a few weeks back.

Like Jana, Nika often sounds like she’s singing from the bottom of a very deep well, but there’s much more commitment to her vocal. Nika can really belt out when she wants to, and does so almost instinctively it seems. Trying to predict where the next few bars will take you is fun, and her delivery often builds with a pleasing intensity, cutting through all the murky distortion that swamps her instruments. ‘Clay Bodies’, lifted from The Spoils, ticks all those boxes and more. MP3 after the jump.
