‘Billie Holiday’

Psychedelia meets punk-inflected shoegaze to great effect with dreamy LA-based quartet Warpaint. The honeyed tones and songwriting are a group effort, led by Emily Kokal and Jenny Lee Lindberg, sister of indie actress Shannyn Sossamon (‘A Knight’s Tale’, ‘The Rules Of Attraction’), who incidentally played drums for the band briefly last year. Three parts girl, one part boy, Warpaint were voted Dazed Digital’s band of the week last month, an accolade largely based on the strength of February’s self-released EP Exquisite Corpse, which employed the magic mixing skills of legendary Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and will get a much deserved wider reissue through Manimal Vinyl in October.

Somewhat bizarrely, ‘Billie Holiday’ starts as a seeming ode to Lady Day herself, but morphs almost imperceptibly into an ethereal reworking of Mary Wells’s Motown hit ‘My Guy’ – assuredly not a part of Holiday’s repertoire! Psychedelia at its best, ‘Billie Holiday’ glides with clear, reverb-kissed guitar notes and ghostly, echoing vocals, sounding rather like the voices lurking behind Alice’s looking glass. This is commanding, melancholic dream-pop with a nonchalant, otherworldly power. Comparisons to Blonde Redhead and Cocteau Twins are apt, while the definite streak of Sonic Youth-esque post-rock that threads through their other material has been muted into a daydream narcosis.
