140709_gemmarayLong-delayed tour to coincide with new album

It’s been a year since we last featured the homegrown musical broth of London’s Gemma Ray on these pages and she’s back already, fiercer, more unpredictable and with a few new ingredients to spice things up. Her second album Lights Out Zoltar! was written pretty much straight off the back of 2008’s The Leader after a dangerous liaison with nasty blood poisoning left her unable to tour the album, much to her frustration. Writing, and later recording with co-producer Michael J Sheehy, was her outlet for those pent up feelings, but, like Sandy Dillon before her, the terror and rage is offset nicely with a measure of humour and beauty in the breakdown.

Now back in good health, Gemma will be embarking on a short UK tour that kicks off in London on September 7th, the same day Bronzerat Records will push Lights Out Zoltar! out of the nest, and reach its conclusion at a different London venue on September 25th. But before all that comes first single ‘100 MPH (In 2nd Gear)’ – a track the PR blurb describes rather enticingly as “Latin-tinged pop-noir” – on August 24th, backed with a cover of folk classic ‘900 Miles’. We’re also told of songs with “surfed-up swagger” (‘Fist Of A Flower’) and shades of “mesmeric folk horror” (‘If You Want To Rock ‘n’ Roll’), while ‘(You Got Me In A) Death Roll’ is described as “rollicking” and “shanty-like”, but not, disappointingly, as a tale told from the point of view of maki sushi. On the theme of horror and death, it appears that Gemma has taken to playing ‘slide’ guitar using a large ‘Psycho’-style knife. Does the Daily Mail know about this?
