‘Seasoned Lovers’

The music of Canadian singer-songwriter Melissa McLelland has been described as “hard to pin down”, but takes its cues from folk, blues, US country and pop.  In the past, Melissa has enjoyed providing backing vocals for fellow Canadian Sarah McLachlan, who in turn featured on a track from Melissa’s last album, Thumbelina’s One Night Stand. Once again produced by husband Luke Doucet of the band Veal, Melissa’s fourth album Victoria Day is out next week and sees the Toronto-based artist bringing in a string quartet and some brass to colour up the arrangements. Featuring serial duettist Ron Sexsmith (yet another fellow Canadian), preview track ‘Seasoned Lovers’ opens with lulling fingerpicked steel acoustic notes, and continues in much the same way throughout with David Travers-Smith, who provided the memorable trumpet on Ani DiFranco’s ‘Untouchable Face’, lending a bit of subtle drama in the background with horns and vibes. Melissa’s silken vocals are perfectly complemented by Ron’s familiar croon and heighten the easy beauty of this polished, ballad-like number with an earthy grace. A country twang warms the slight guitar tremolo, and the rainy springtime imagery that Melissa evokes seems far from melancholy. A perfectly charming introduction, and almost too good to give away!
