‘Rebellious Palpitations’

Rising up from the cinders of the ugly demise of LA rockers The Distillers comes the whirling scuzz-rock dervish of Spinnerette, who, despite their crappy name, have defied the Brody Dalle haters and satisfied the lovers with an updated, sexier sound that takes some of the edge off their frontwoman’s serrating, bratty snarl but never lets up on the attitude. When asked in an interview how the two bands differ, Brody replied “Think of all the differences between a girl and a woman – Spinnerette is a full grown woman: smart, good looking and opinionated. She’s refined without being anal. But she’ll still knock you around and get drunk in front of your mom.” Keen to stress that Spinnerette is not a real band but a revolving cast of musicians behind her, Brody’s new songs clearly come from a personal place. Early songs like ‘Impaler’ were written all the way back in 2005 when Brody was pregnant with her daughter Camille.

‘Rebellious Palpitations’ is the first all-new track we’ve heard off the self-titled album in a while and it’s more of the same melodic, danceable rock we heard on the Ghetto Love EP earlier this year. Cleverly layered guitars add to the tumult of Brody’s emotionally raw delivery of lyrics about drugs and cheap sex as the all but indecipherable backing vocals give the song an edgy tension. All in all it makes a convincing and impressive case for everyone to pay close attention to Brody’s newfound interest in musicality over chaos. Spinnerette is out on Monday (June 15th).
