Excitable singer-songwriter Wallis Bird releases her second album New Boots in her native Ireland on July 24th after 2 years of almost non-stop touring behind her critically acclaimed debut Spoons. Sharing her time between Dublin, London and her old flat in Mannheim, Germany, Wallis struggled through a period of writer’s block and personal upheaval that comes through in the album’s seesaw emotions. “I’ve gone through an immense amount of shit – good shit and bad shit this past year – so the songwriting is up and it’s extremely down too,” she told Dublin-based music scene website OneMoreTune late last October. “I’ve written some of the happiest songs I’ve ever written and some of the weirdest songs I’ve ever written.”

When the block broke, the songs came thick and fast and Wallis ended up recorded over 21 tracks for the album, finally whittling the selection down to 11 for the final tracklist. Sonically, New Boots is noticeably heavier and stranger than its predecessor with more electric guitar and, on some songs, more cryptic lyrics. “It’s a bit more puzzley,” she grins. One of the heavier songs, ‘To My Bones’, is a tribute to her adventurous, exuberant life as a musician, while forthcoming UK single ‘LaLaLand’ (out June 21st) is one of the ‘weird’ ones she talks about. Hear them both over at her Myspace, along with two other songs. ‘To My Bones’ will be the first single released in Ireland, out June 26th. New Boots is released through indie label Rubyworks in the UK & Ireland; Columbia Records will release the album in the rest of the world later this year.
