‘Just Say’

Tenor saxophonist YolanDa Brown has packed a lot into her 26 years – supporting The Temptations on their 2008 UK tour, collaborations on and off stage with the likes of Mica Paris, Terri Walker and Soweto Kinch, and fronting a talk show on satellite TV. Oh, and a PhD in Management Science at the University of Kent. Her debut EP, 2007’s Finding My Voice, won her a MOBO Award for Best Jazz Artist and an Urban Music Awards nomination, and the subsequent release of a live DVD of a sold out performance at London’s Mermaid Theatre secured her even more fans.

‘Just Say’ is lifted from YolanDa’s second EP, A Step Closer, which was released digitally in April and will be launched properly at a very special one-off gig at famed London jazz venue Ronnie Scott’s on June 25th. ‘Just Say’ features the handiwork of producer Self-Taught Beats (aka Justin McKoy), whose squeaky vocal stylings and subtle programming immediately identify the track as something fresh for YolanDa. Once you get used to the potentially gimmicky voice, the track reveals itself as a relaxing, head-nodding pleasure that oozes class and sophistication through YolanDa’s coolly laidback reedwork.

Catch YolanDa’s impressive live show at the following events:

21.06.09 Glasgow Jazz Fest, Glasgow
25.06.09 Ronnie Scott’s, London
10.07.09 Marlborough Jazz Festival, Marlborough
21.09.09 London African Music Festival, London
