We’ve heard a lot about the new, post-Licks Juliette Lewis over the last few months and her recent show at London venue Koko was pretty impressive by anyone’s standards, so it’s happy-making to know that the album Terra Incognita finally has a release date (September 1st) and a tracklist (below). The 12-track album was produced by The Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez in Brooklyn and Guadalajara in Mexico, helping Juliette to realise the songs she had originally recorded as rough demos at the piano. “He blew my mind,” she says. “I was looking at combining the elements of heaven and earth sonically, and Omar seemed to understand this language.”

Described by Juliette as an album about “disillusionment and hope. Determination and despair. Romance and tragedy,” Terra Incognita deals with love and friendships on a very personal level that really comes through on songs like ‘Ghost’ and the addictive, Tanya Donelly-esque ‘Suicide Dive Bombers’. “It’s a concept,” she explains. “The Little Prince in a Mad Max world. Where the wild things are. These contrasts. It is a roughed up warrior full of pixie magic and sonic love landscapes but on spiked wheels on a barren dirt road in search of the remains of civilization.”

Terra Incognita is all about exploring her range as a vocalist and as a musician, using softer strokes where the songs require them. It’s not all dreamy and ethereal – ‘Uh Huh’ is described as a poppy “make-out jam” while ‘Hard Lovin’ Woman’ is an entertaining venture into Janis Joplin territory, recorded in a single take. “I let the haunted woman come through – the tormented blues soul singer – as well as my full-throttle rock voice,” she says. You can currently hear ‘Suicide Dive Bombers’, ‘Romeo’, ‘Hard Lovin’ Woman’ and ‘Fantasy Bar’ over on Juliette’s snazzy new Myspace. Also check out her recent Daytrotter session. Juliette will be touring this summer with Cat Power and The Pretenders – an unlikely line-up but one you can guarantee Wears The Trousers will be shouting loudly about if it ventures over this side of the Atlantic.

Juliette already has some UK dates of her own lined up for October. Catch her at the following venues:
