Solo album out in the autumn

Punk pioneer Exene Cervenka yesterday revealed that she was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis after “some months of not feeling 100% healthy”. In a strange coincidence, the female lead of legendary L.A. punk band X is currently on tour in support of the Sweet Relief Fund charity established in 1992 by fellow MS sufferer Victoria Williams to provide financial assistance to US musicians who can’t afford to buy health insurance. Exene acknowledged the link in a statement posted on her official website, saying: “Although this is obviously unfortunate news, I am choosing to see the positive in it. I, and X as a band, have supported the Sweet Relief charity since the mid-1990s; the irony of this is not lost on any of us.”

“While this diagnosis will most certainly mean some changes for me, personally, it will not affect my commitments to the current X tour, nor will it affect my solo album that is slated for release this fall on Bloodshot Records,” she added. “My focus will certainly be on maintaining my health — many people remain strong and continue to live their lives as productively as they had before an MS diagnosis and I plan to be one of those people.”

The all-request tour continues until July 24th in the US with no scheduled European dates. Exene and her former husband John Doe – the other half of X’s lungs – are reportedly working on songs for a possible new X album, their first in over 15 years.
