Icelandic folktronica pioneers Múm will release their fifth album Sing Along To Songs You Don’t Know on August 24th through the Morr Music label. Where 2007’s Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy – the band’s first release following the departure of original vocalist Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir (aka Kría Brekkan) – found the band in a vibrant mood, Sing Along To Songs You Don’t Know is a more sorrowful and reflective affair. Billed as “an ode to the light in its different shapes, from a fading bulb to the blinding sun,” the songs play with and manipulate shade, filling in the nooks and crannies of the music with typically unusual instrumentation and, in some songs, the Estonian Susiapäisa Mixed Choir.

Much of the album was written by Gunnar Örn Tynes alone in a cabin deep within the Icelandic countryside, later decamping to Finland and Estonia. Along with Gunnar and fellow founder memberÖrvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, the album features Múm regulars Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson (trumpet / piano / keyboards/ string arrangements), Hildur Guðnadóttir (cello / vocals), Sigurlaug Gísladóttir (vocals/ ukulele/ various) and Samuli Kosminen (drums / percussion), with additional contributions from newcomers Róbert Reynisson (guitars / ukulele), Högni Egilsson (choral arrangements) and Guðbjörg Hlín Guðmundsdóttir (violin). Örvar’s parents’ parakeet also cameos, although you’ll have to keep a sharp ear out for him.

Múm have a bunch of dates lined up, including appearances at Brighton’s Loop Festival and the Summer Sundae Weekender in Leicester. Catch them at the following venues:
