‘Dorchester Hotel’

Swedish five-piece The Sounds may be more popular in Scandinavia and in the US than they are on this little island, but their third album Crossing The Rubicon (out June 1st) may be the one to change that. And what better way to start than with ‘Dorchester Hotel’, a slick, radio-friendly slice of pop-rock that references a British cultural institution? Wears The Trousers could perhaps only afford a night in the janitor’s cupboard, or, say, the laundry chute at said hotel but, to be fair, The Sounds aren’t actually singing about staying there. Lead singer Maja Ivarsson may look a bit like Debbie Harry with her flicked back, peroxide hair-do – and Blondie are paraded as a major influence – but she sounds more like Avril Lavigne here as some of the band’s New Wave elements have fallen away in favour of an even more straightforward sound with dependable guitar chops and a bit of synth. Currently on a massive three-month North American tour as the guests of returning ska-pop superstars No Doubt, The Sounds clearly aren’t afraid of working harder than ever to secure a larger fanbase. A decade into their career, this could be their time. MP3 after the jump.
