The personal and the political combine on Texan singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith’s latest album, The Loving Kind, due out June 15th through Rounder Records. Having spent the last few years feeling hamstrung on the songwriting front, Nanci took her inspiration for the eight new self-penned songs from newsworthy stories that seemed to her to tap into the general feeling of hope in America in the lead up to Barack Obama’s victory in November’s election. Most notably, the title track was inspired by the story of Mildred and Richard Loving, the interracial couple at the centre of a landmark civil rights case in 1967 that ended the US ban on marriages between blacks and whites.“I read Mildred Loving’s obituary in The New York Times last year and it just floored me,” says Nanci. “She never remarried [after Richard tragically died in a car crash] and in her last interview, just before she passed away, she expressed hope that their case would eventually be the open door to the legalisation of same sex marriage.”

Other political songs include ‘Across America’, the Bush-whacking ‘Still Life’, and ‘Not Innocent Enough’, which digs into the controversy surrounding Philip Workman, an innocent man convicted of killing a police officer and put to death in May 2007 despite new evidence coming to light that proved he wasn’t guilty.“I started writing this song long before Philip was executed, but just couldn’t finish it until that final injustice took place,” says Griffith. Closer to home, Nanci penned ‘Up Against The Rain’ in honour of her mentor Townes van Zandt, but also her “dear, beautiful stepfather” who passed away late last year. “[It] could be for anyone’s hero,” she added. Rounding out the tracklist are four new covers and a re-recording of Nanci’s own ‘One Of These Days’, originally from her 1986 album The Last Of The True Believers.
