If you thought Wears The Trousers was niche, check out Tom Tom Magazine, an exciting new publication for and about women drummers. Set up by Mindy Abovitz, drummer for Brooklyn band Taigaa! [see our review of their latest album here], the magazine aims to build a community among women drummers and to dispel the notion that the drums are a man’s instrument. Setting out her agenda in an interview with LA-based culture publication Anthem, Mindy said: “One goal of Tom Tom Magazine is empowerment through awareness, knowledge sharing, and community,” Abovitz told Anthem. “Ideally we will make some headway and chip away at this beast.”

“It took me a long time to identify as a drummer and that may have to do with the fact that it is a male dominated instrument,” she added. “If I could change the kit I would make it lighter, slightly smaller — jazz kit size with a full kit sound and feel — and I would make the instrument more accessible to women and girls. That takes a lot more than the design of the instrument. That involves changing the way people think about female drummers: marketing to our demographic, designing kits for women, and having music shop sales personnel expect us and treat us with the same respect that dudes get.”

Mindy is currently gathering content for the magazine’s first issue, which will include fellow Brooklynites Telepathe, Noveller and Gina-marie Scardino of Breaker! Breaker!, Swedish trio Liechtenstein (who release their debut album Survival Strategies In A Modern World on May 25th through Fraction Discs). Add ’em to your blogroll.
