‘Pagoda’

Perhaps best known for her stint as one half of Metallic Falcons (the other half being CocoRosie’s superlative operatic triller Sierra Casady), Matteah Baim returns at the end of March with her second solo album Laughing Boy, an altogether lusher, richer experience than her stark and often uncomfortable 2007 debut Death Of The Sun. Including the brilliantly titled ‘Moths On Fire’, the album’s 13 songs once again possess a strange and sprawling occultish charm. Preview track ‘Pagoda’ sets out Baim’s agenda with an insular, almost hymnal ode to the transfixing power of music. By drawing out many of her notes and tucking them into her husky croon like a doting bedside guardian, Matteah ushers the listener through a gently hypnotic experience as a psychedelic shimmer dances like a candle in the background. Pretty as a lotus flower, in its own way. MP3 after the jump.
